What Is MyAtsa?

MyASTA is committed to helping string teachers at all stages of their careers. If you are a new teacher, don’t know much about strings, or just want to improve your skills, the MyASTA Mentor Program can put you in touch with an expert in string education.

The MyASTA Mentor Program Committee pairs mentees with qualified mentors based on what the mentee is interested in and what the mentor has done in the past. The mentee and the mentor talk to each other by email, phone, video chat, or sometimes in person. Observations of teaching, either in person or on video, can be talked about between a mentor and a mentee. Some mentors and students also meet at the MyASTA National Conference every year.

MyASTA national mentoring programme started when MyASTA members, many of whom are the only string or orchestra teacher in their building, told the organisation what they needed. In the spring of 2016, a session called “Preparing to be an MyASTA Mentor” was held as a pre-conference event.

During this session, experienced string teachers from all over the country talked, watched videos, and did hands-on activities to learn about the teacher development continuum, mentoring styles, communication strategies, and the challenges of teaching strings and orchestras. Dr. Margaret Berg, Dr. Colleen Conway, and Mr. Bob Phillips were the people in charge of the pre-conference.

MyASTA is now taking applications for mentors for the school year 2022-2023. Please fill out this online form to apply. Mentors are chosen based on their past experience as mentors and the needs of the MyASTA mentees. Mentors must attend at least one of the online training sessions for mentors that happen several times during the school year.
